Economic Tragedy: A Generation of Lost Careers?

Is Starbucks the Best Career Left in America?A few nights ago I was at a cocktail party and a friend who I hadn't talked to in years asked how my Radio Show and Career Counseling business was going. Knowing nothing about this fellow's politics, I choose my next words carefully.

"You can't counsel people on developing careers when the government is doing everything in their power to destroy them." I replied and watched for a response.

Although the party was at the home of a notorious liberal who has a winter home in the "People's Republic of Cambridge," my friend responded instantly as a kindred spirit who was sick to death over the current administrations assault on the private sector.

There is a story that I have been kicking around for years called “Illegal Immigration and Your Career.” Perhaps I’ll tell it one day, but not today.

Today I want to tell a story that sounds like the compete opposite of that one; today I want to talk about why I love [legal] Immigrants.

In case you haven’t noticed, my web site was created by a company called Sopantech in India. In fact, I have had several arguments with liberals who throw this in my face when they’ve lost their argument with something like:

“How can you say you’re for the private sector in America and then outsource your web site to India – you hypocrite.”

For the last few years I have dedicated my work to helping the private sector survive in America, but truth-be-told, my primary allegiance is to the private sector first and the American private sector second.

Aghast you say; how can you be so un-American? It’s simple, let me tell you.

"As lovers of peace, we call on our leaders to let the death of this mass murderer move us to a deep reexamination. How have we have allowed the unspeakable violence against us turn into unspeakable violence by us?"

- "Madea" Code Pink May 2, 2011

People will digest the news that "Osama won't be down for breakfast" differently. Democrats will call it a great day for Obama, Republicans will call it a great day for George Bush and the War on Terror, and with the possible exception of Code Pink, most Americans will call it a great day for the Navy Seals and CIA.

What most people seldom consider is the impact the War on Terror and the recent death of Osama Bin Laden has had on their careers.

Liberal Hypocrite? As a self appointed “Private Sector Career Crusader,” one might ask why I’d be commenting on the horrific shooting in Tucson.

I’d admit, this topic is out of my normal area of expertise, but since the New York Times pseudo economist Paul Krugman decided it was appropriate to blame conservatives for the shooting before the blood had even dried on the sidewalk, I felt compelled to enter the fray.

While Krugman and democrat county sheriff Clarence Dupnik were the first to blame FOX News in general and Glenn Beck and Bill O’Reilly by name on Saturday, many of the usual suspects on MSNBC, The Daily Koz, and Moveon.org are doing the same.

Still, it’s difficult to recall a less responsible piece of journalism appearing in the Times than Krugman’s “Climate of Hate."

How’s this for liberal demagoguery?

“And there’s a huge contrast in the media. Listen to Rachel Maddow or Keith Olbermann, and you’ll hear a lot of caustic remarks and mockery aimed at Republicans. But you won’t hear jokes about shooting government officials or beheading a journalist at The Washington Post. Listen to Glenn Beck or Bill O’Reilly, and you will.”

-          Paul Krugman New York Times January 9, 2011

I watch a fair amount of FOX News and I can categorically call Krugman’s charge A LIE. How the Times can continue to prop up this little partisan weasel as a legitimate economist is beyond me.

Shattered DreamsI am a baby boomer. I was born in the 50's and grew up in the midst of the largest "cohort" in American history. At the risk of generalization, I'd say we were spoiled. Thanks to the sacrifices of our parents and grandparents, most of our lives were relatively sweet.

I was born in a housing project in Cambridge Massachusetts, but grew up in "the burbs," in a town called Acton. My father's career went well, but he was a very bright guy who put himself through college and worked like a dog at local manufacturing company called General Radio.

What was remarkable about growing up in Acton was the fact I was pretty much immune to economic "classes." My best friend's father also worked at General Radio. My father was a Vice President and his father worked on the assembly line, yet we enjoyed almost identical lifestyles.

"I'm 63 and I'm Tired"For the last week, I have been thinking about the whole notion of funding 151 weeks of unemployment; effectively 3 years paid vacation.

I know, I know, it's no vacation to be out of work and pounding the pavement looking for a job, but please, don't tell me that you can't find something after 3 years of seriously looking.

The problem is, that the amount of unemployment benefits paid for 3 years is based on just 6 months of actually "paying into the system." And just how much is this benefit? You can find your state maximum payments here, but I can tell you that my home state Massachusetts takes first place paying $2,721/month!

I can also tell you that I do know true stories in Massachusetts of people who have taken their 2008 lay-off as a paid vacations and are just staying home and banking what has now become a $95,000 gift from the taxpayers.

These are not single parents struggling to feed their families, but rather one of the spouses in a two-earner family who has cashed in on our national bleeding hearts. I find this unconscionable, but that's the problem with government handouts -- they can always be gamed for unintended profits.

The Piligrims Discovered Capitalism! Our history teachers told us that the Pilgrims came to America in pursuit of religious freedom. No doubt true, but we seldom hear the story of the discovery of the Free Enterprise System that occurred after the Pilgrim's early attempts at Communism failed!

After I did my Thanksgiving piece yesterday, I found this story by Caroline Baum at Bloomberg.com called "Big Government Not Invited to Thanksgiving Feast." As I read it, I was amazed to learn that roots of American Capitalism are clearly documented in the accounts of William Bradford, governor of the Plymouth Bay Colony for 30 years between 1621 and 1656. Bradford’s history “Of Plimoth Plantation” was first published in 1856.

First Famine

Most Americans think of Thanksgiving as a day off from school or work, a time to gather with friends and family and celebrate with a huge feast. If children know anything about the origins of this national holiday, declared each year by presidential proclamation, it’s that the Pilgrims, grateful for a good harvest in their new land, set aside this day to give thanks.

I admit it, today is a busy day and my mind is already working on tomorrow's story. That said, I did wake up thinking about how fortunate we are to live in America, the most perfect implementation of Capitalism on earth (albeit quite imperfect).

In 2007 Walter Williams from the Swedish think tank Timbro said this about America:

“Poverty in the United States, in an absolute sense, has virtually disappeared. Today, there’s nothing remotely resembling poverty of yesteryear. However, if poverty is defined in the relative sense, the lowest fifth of income-earners, “poverty” will always be with us.

No matter how poverty is defined, if I were an unborn spirit, condemned to a life of poverty, but God allowed me to choose which nation I wanted to be poor in, I’d choose the United States. Our poor must be the envy of the world’s poor.”

As I started to consider a "thanks piece," I came across Professor Mark Perry's Thanksgiving Day Post and decided to re-post it in it's entirety.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Dave

The Frightening Tale of Obama’s Peeps

“When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.” Benjamin Franklin I don’t know about you, but the recent “bump” in Obama’s approval numbers are starting to depress me. Can’t people see that he’s killing the economy, stifling business expansion with taxes and regulations, and fueling the kind of class warfare that tears nations apart? The thing is, if you study the numbers, it’s not surprising at all. Our nation is now h [ ... ]
